My Experience at El Noviciado Social Club in Madrid

Real review of El Noviciado Social Club in Madrid. Inside N7A Club, the vibe, the crowd, and why the weed did not match the hype.

The Club Everyone Would Not Stop Talking About

So my first visit to El Noviciado Social Club was back when the whole cannabis club world in Madrid was still very new to me.

At that time I had started getting noticed by different social clubs across the city. Owners were inviting me out constantly. Madrid has a lot of clubs but one name kept coming up over and over again.

El Noviciado.

Some club owners admired it and wanted to copy the whole aesthetic. Others rolled their eyes and called it an overhyped playground for pijos and expats who like to smell their own farts. When I looked it up myself I was pretty sure this was not my scene at all.

But eventually one very pijo club owner and his tech boyfriend invited me out. My favorite slightly pretentious Brit Tim came along for the adventure. A WhatsApp was sent. And off we went walking from San Bernardo toward the Noviciado area.

The Entrance Felt Like a Movie

El Noviciado is also known locally as N7A Club or Noviciado 7. It operates as a private cannabis association where registered members can gather and consume cannabis under Spanish association law. If you want a deeper breakdown of the laws you can read our guide on is weed legal in Spain.

From the outside the building looks historic. Almost like an old Jewish temple. Fun fact it actually was. Later it became a gay bathhouse. Now it is one of the most talked about cannabis clubs in Madrid. Quite the journey for one building.

To enter you walk into what looks like a small Chinese sandwich shop. An older man is making sandwiches. Very normal. Very calm. You walk to the back, there is a door, some magic words get said in Spanish, invitations shown, ten euro day fee paid and suddenly you are inside this whole hidden world. It felt like the speakeasy days and I genuinely loved that part.

A very calm yogi host gave us a tour and brought us down into a cave where a DJ was playing. And look, I kept thinking about all the layers that space has lived through. Prayer when it was a temple. Wild nights when it was a bathhouse. And now people dancing to electronic music in that same historic cave. It was a lot to take in but in a cool way.

The Vibe Was Intellectual Chaos

Inside you see everything. People doing yoga. A random piano. Chess boards. Vintage furniture that feels like a slightly upscale fraternity house. Leather couches. Plants everywhere. Little corners where people whisper about crypto and tech startups.

The drink menu is very curated. Panna water. Fentimans ginger beer. Curiosity cola. Tea and coffee that is nicely presented and yes, you absolutely pay premium prices for all of it.

The crowd was genuinely interesting. Tech people from Google and Meta. Influencers. NYU hoodies everywhere, my alma mater actually, so I had to laugh. Europeans from Germany, Italy, the Netherlands. Latin Americans from Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia. Even someone from Monaco.

It felt like a networking event that someone decided to disguise as a cannabis club. And to be fair it is one of the most unique cannabis club environments in Madrid. I will give it that.

Now Let Us Talk About the Weed

This is where things changed for me.

I did not pay for the flower that night, my friends handled it. I believe it was around fifteen to twenty euros per gram. You are limited in how much you can take at once and they really discourage you from leaving with product, which makes sense legally.

If you are new to cannabis culture here and wondering what a spliff is you can read our guide on what a spliff is and how to roll one.

The spliff was rolled with tobacco. Not my preference but I was a guest so we go with it.

I was genuinely excited. With all that branding and all that hype I was expecting some serious fire flower.

The first drag. Pure anticipation.

Then immediate disappointment.

It tasted harsh. Almost moldy. It reminded me of ditch weed from when I was nineteen. I coughed hard. Like really hard. I actually felt sick. Not exaggerating. The last thing I wanted after that was food or munchies or anything.

And that is the part that stuck with me. Because for a space that absolutely nails atmosphere, design, drinks, branding, networking, and exclusivity, the cannabis itself did not match the aesthetic at all. Not even close.

Maybe it was a bad batch. Maybe it was an off night. But that was my experience and I am telling it straight.

The Area Redeemed the Night

After that I needed fresh air badly. Luckily the Noviciado area is full of great food spots. We ended up at Luna Rossa. Authentic Italian. Proper pasta. Proper pizza. It genuinely saved the night, highly recommend if you are in that area.

Has It Changed Since Then

This was almost three years ago now. I have heard they have made upgrades and are experimenting more, including partnerships with edible chefs like The Cookie Shaman, a US based pastry chef. Clubs evolve. Quality changes. Management changes. So take my experience as a moment in time, not a final verdict.

Final Thoughts

El Noviciado is cool. No doubt about it. Historic building. Hidden entrance. International crowd. Curated drinks. Yoga and DJs in caves. It is absolutely a vibe.

But if you are like me and just want to smoke quality flower and relax without doing downward dog or overpaying for sparkling water, your expectations might not match reality. And I say that with love.
